Romford BID Celebrates the Launch of Permanent Green Space on
North Street – Named by the Public!

Romford BID is proud to announce the transformation of a much-loved pop-up park on North Street into a permanent green space – now officially named North Street Garden, following an online public vote. The space was unveiled on Friday 2 May by Mayor of Havering, Gerry O’Sullivan.

Originally introduced in 2022 by Romford BID as a temporary installation, this pocket park quickly became a cherished spot for residents, workers, and visitors alike. Designed to bring colour, calm, and community spirit to Romford’s high street, the space has become a desirable resting spot in the town.

Now, thanks to new funding and the support of the London Borough of Havering, the UK Government, and Romford BID, the park is here to stay – with a fresh new look and exciting enhancements to match.

The Garden now has lush new planting, including trees, pollinator-friendly flowers, and species selected for drought and shade tolerance. The paving has been upgraded, combining new materials with reclaimed site pavers for a sustainable and stylish finish. Low rain garden planters have been used, and a raised planter features a distinctive glazed brick front wall. Modern street furniture has also been installed, offering a comfortable and welcoming environment for all ages to relax and enjoy.

Julie Frost, Romford BID Director said, “We’re thrilled to have delivered this permanent green space for Romford. North Street Garden is more than just a name – it’s a reflection of how this space has become part of our community. We’re so pleased that the public helped us choose it!”

Councillor Barry Mugglestone, Havering’s Cabinet Member for Environment said, “Havering has some great parks around the outskirts of Romford town centre but there was no green space within the busy high street areas. We then had the opportunity along with the Romford BID and the GLA’s

UKSPF fund, to create and improve a green space just next to our local shops and businesses. We hope that the North Street Garden is somewhere residents and anyone working in the area and using our local shops, can enjoy.”

The public were invited to vote on the name and logo, choosing between North Street Green, North Street Garden, and North Street Pocket Park. With overwhelming support, North Street Garden came out on top.

This transformation forms part of Romford BID’s wider mission to enhance the town centre, foster community pride, and create a more vibrant, accessible urban environment.
